Ed Roberts (Wikipedia)

My connection with Ed came as a result of seeing his Altair 8800 on the front cover of Popular Electronics in November 1971. I called Ed at his company, MITS in Albuquerque, and explained that my company had developed an interface that would permit the recording of digital information onto 10.5″ tape reels and would be able to search for required data sections. At that time the only form of tape storage available to Ed was the Phillips Cassette which a very limited capacity and no proper search. He was very interested and asked if I would visit  with him in Albuquerque.

I flew out there and Ed met me at the airport in his red Chevvy 4×4 pick up truck. He explained that his major concern was a simpler and extended language to run on his computer. He had five guys in the back room working on this. Two are well-known. Bill Gates and Steve Allen. Microsoft was incorporated in Albuquerque at that time.

I was considering selling the 880 under one of my brand names and changed the front panel to make more user friendly. The Altair and the Lamb version are shown here.
